Frequently Asked Questions

What do I bring to my first appointment?
Most important is an open mind! Also bring your insurance card – there is a minimal amount of paperwork where I request your name address and phone number along with Insurance information.

What will we talk about?

My belief is that we start where the client is…..that means that we talk about what you are comfortable talking about and when you are comfortable talking about it. I will start by asking, “What brings you in today?” and we progress from there. If I bring up a topic that you do not want to discuss, you simply say so and I will respect that wish.

What if I am in Crisis and feel like I am not safe?

Call 988 which is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Crisis counselors are available 24/7 to help you. You can also download the McHelp App. The McHelp App is a free anonymous app that allows you to confidentially text or talk to a mental health counselor.

Can we do telehealth?

Yes! Telehealth allows me to provide therapy via a live video site that is confidential and HIPPA compliant. This can be done anywhere that you have privacy and either a computer or a smart phone.

Why can’t I just talk to my best friend?
I have had very specific education and training that differentiates me from a supportive friend. Supportive friends are incredibly important to the quality of our lives, but they are not trained professionals. As a therapist, I can help you to approach your situation in a new way. I will teach you new skills, help you gain different perspectives, I will listen without judgement, I will help you to question your beliefs and expectations. Counseling is completely confidential, so you won’t have to worry about your story being shared with others.

What if my husband, mother, neighbor, etc. calls and wants to talk to you about me?

I am bound by very strict Federal laws and Professional Ethics to keep everything we talk about confidential. The only time that I am allowed to share information about a client is if I believe that you could harm yourself or someone else.
